Experience the magic of running through the heart of Luxor! The Egyptian Luxor Marathon 2026 brings together runners from around the world for an unforgettable race along the Nile, past ancient temples, and through the timeless landscapes of one of Egypt’s most iconic cities.
Outrunning the Pharaohs Since 1992
For 33 years, the Egyptian Marathon has celebrated the unique connection between sport, history, and one of the world's greatest civilizations. Established in 1992, it is the oldest continuously held marathon in Africa and the Middle East, welcoming runners from across the globe to experience a race unlike any other.
The journey begins beneath the magnificent Temple of Queen Hatshepsut in Luxor and follows a spectacular course through some of Egypt's most iconic ancient landmarks, including the Temple of Medinet Habu, the Temple of Amenophis III, the Colossi of Memnon, and many other remarkable archaeological sites. Participants can choose from four race distances—5K, 12K, Half Marathon (21K), and the AIMS-measured Marathon—offering an unforgettable experience inspired by Egypt's rich pharaonic heritage.
Over the years, the Egyptian Marathon has welcomed distinguished international champions, including Olympic gold medalists Alain Mimoun, Waldemar Cierpinski, and Gelindo Bordin, as well as renowned runners Roland Winkler and Toshihiko Nakayama. Their participation has helped establish the event as one of the world's most unique destination marathons.
Complementing this legacy is the historic Pharaonic Race 100 KM, inspired by ancient inscriptions discovered in 1977 by Egyptian Egyptologist Ahmed Moussa. Dating back to the reign of King Taharqa (690–665 BC), the inscriptions describe a remarkable 100-kilometre race held to test the endurance of Egyptian soldiers along a route stretching from Saqqara to the Fayoum Oasis. Today, the modern race revives this extraordinary tradition, celebrating one of the earliest recorded endurance events in history and preserving a running legacy that has endured for thousands of years.

The Egyptian Luxor Marathon is open to all runners, regardless of ability level. No qualifying criteria or prior qualifications are required for registration. The minimum age requirement is 8 years for the 5K race, 10 years for the 12K race, 16 years for the Half Marathon, and 21 years for the Full Marathon. Participant age will be determined based on the year of birth.
The Egyptian Luxor Marathon will be organized in accordance with international standards and the rules and regulations established by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the Egyptian Athletics Federation, and the Race Organizer. Doping controls will be conducted in accordance with the relevant authorities' regulations, and the Race Organizer reserves the right to conduct random drug testing on any athlete participating in the event.
As with many major races around the world, the Egyptian Luxor Marathon will implement a cut-off time of 6 hours for the Full Marathon and 4 hours for the 21K, 12K, and 5K races, measured from the official race start. This is applied to maintain the competitive integrity of each race distance and due to operational limitations that prevent roads from remaining closed indefinitely while participants complete the course.
Every participant in the Egyptian Luxor Marathon — Full Marathon, Half Marathon (21K), 12K, and 5K — will receive a finisher's medal upon successfully completing their race. All race distances will be accurately timed using the MyLaps Timing System. Results will be published in both overall and age group categories. The top three overall male and top three overall female finishers in each race distance will receive special awards.
